David R. Kline was born and raised on Long Island, NY. He received his B.A. from State University of New York at Oswego and his JD from Hofstra University School of Law.

After graduating from law school, David was awarded the Ginsberg Family Post-Graduate Justice Fellowship, through which he worked with Gideon’s Promise, a premier civil rights organization dedicated to improving the quality of public defense across the United States. With Gideon’s Promise, David spent three years as a public defender in Lafayette, Louisiana, where he represented hundreds of clients charged with everything from misdemeanor offenses to homicides.

After leaving Louisiana, David returned to his home in Suffolk County, Long Island, where he worked briefly as a Public Defender with the Legal Aid Society of Suffolk County. David then worked with the Brooklyn Defender Services where he served as a Senior Trial Attorney, specializing in criminal and immigration law.

In 2022 David made the difficult decision to leave public defense. He did so because he felt that “where the criminal case ends, the story doesn’t have to end, and it shouldn’t end.” David strongly believes that in order to reform the criminal court system, the stories of those mired in the system must be told, and that often the best vehicle to tell those stories is civil litigation. Since entering private practice, David has handled all manner of civil rights cases and won thousands in compensation for his clients.
